I remember back in the day when the Beast Wars series used to be on TV and in my opinion the shows were great. However, I never got into the Beast Machines series (this came after the Beast Wars), which is a continuation of the Beast Wars series when all the characters are back on Cybertron. The Beast Machines box set is 700 minutes that is compressed onto four DVDs. This whole Beast Machines series just doesn’t match up to the Beast Wars; the Beast Wars were just so great.

In the story you are going to have the same main characters (Optimus, Rat Trap, Cheetor etc…) and they are going to be fighting Megatron, and the Vehicons (his non-spark army) once again. Just like in the Beast Wars, the story line is simple, but the Beast Wars had the action that was interesting and fun to watch. This series kind of has the same plot continuation but it just doesn’t draw you into the series like the Beast Wars did. This series is picking up from the Beast Wars when they get back to Cybertron but somehow when the Maximals got back to Cybertron their memory banks had been erased, and they were once again battling Megatron. Megatron is using a “new breed of Transformers” which are the Vehicons. The Vehicons are just so stupid.  They are either, Tanks, Planes or Motorcycles. They have no mind of their own and are controlled by Megatron. This is very unoriginal.

The graphics, background and the appearance of the characters looks really dull in the DVD. Their arms and legs are very long and skinny unlike these same characters in the Beast Wars. The Transformers (in Beast Wars) looked much tougher and could do some damage, and here they look weak and stupid. They also say the same phrases over and over, which is just unintelligent and throughout the first DVD they keep running away from the Vehicons. There aren’t any big fight scenes.

However, I have seen worse attempts, when companies try to make a continuation of series. It was a good idea to try to continue the series but they just didn’t do it well, especially with the way the characters looked and how they had them repeat phrases over and over again. So overall, they could have done a much better job in every aspect of creating the series which would have made this a great continuation of the Beast Wars.

In general, you are going to have to be a big fan of Beast Wars to get into this box set.  Overall, I give this a 6.5 out of 10. It comes up short in all aspects. It is a just something that should not have been made because in my opinion, by doing it poorly, they hurt the series in making a continuation of the Beast Wars.
